Is the Cover Letter Dying or Being Reborn
Is the Cover Letter Dying or Being Reborn Is the Cover Letter Dying or Being Reborn But, even if a cover letter is not asked for, there are plenty of situations where a cover letter is recommended- and will be beneficial. For example, if you need to explain a previous termination, you are making a career/industry change, or returning from a period of unemployment, etc. If there are obvious question marks in a resume, then ansicht should be answered in a cover letter, which means that cover letters will always have a place in the corporate world in these situations. So, while I dont quite think that cover letters are dead, they are losing their power to differentiate you from the rest as they are increasingly not being read and not being asked for. Most employers probably use them as more of a de-selection tool (if people dont include one) than a differentiation tool. This is why I think, in the current paper format, cover letters are not dead but limited in their ability to make a b ig impact apart from the specific situations as mentioned directly above. I do, however think that they are dying. But, video technology has created the opportunity to inject life back into the thecover letter. Now, I am not just jumping on the social-media-will-fix-all bandwagon, and if I was, Id just be shouting video resume repeatedly at the top of my voice. I am talking specifically about the additional emotional content that can be conveyed in a impassioned but authentic video cover letter message over what can be achieved in a written cover letter. Cover letters are about showing your conviction, passion and fit (whereas video resumes are more of a news reading exercise). Most of you must know the frustration of being passionate about a role or company and just wishing that you could get into the interview room to show them your energy, enthusiasm, authenticity, commitment, sense of purpose, etc. A video cover letter could enable to you to fast forward that experience and bring it right into the recruiters inbox. You can leap right into their computer screen with yourvideo cover letter and explain with passion and authenticity why you really want this role why you think this career change is right and show that truly passionate, engaged and intelligent rolle sitting behind the stereotype that the recruiter may have of you. Done well, a video cover letter gives you an opportunity to deliver a powerful and compelling speech, which showcases your true, zeal, passion and authenticity. So, in truth, I think the traditional cover letter is not dead, but dying. It is in the process of evolution and being reborn into the more socially resonant, emotionally appealing video cover message- and its up to candidates to start using it.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers
The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers The 5 Best US Airports for Business Travelers In an ideal world, business trips would always go ahead smoothly and as planned. The frustratingreality is this rarely happens.Delays and cancellationsare a fact oflife when youre traveling by flight. Not only can these obstacles affect your perceived reliability and professionalism by making you late to important functions, but they can also greatly impact your mood. If you reach your destination late, stressed, guilty, and tired, youre less likely to perform to the best of your ability. However, some airports are better than others when it comes to flight reliability. Some also have better amenities, faster Wi-Fi, and even perks like joga studios.Want your business trip to go as smoothly as possible? If you can, try traveling through one of these great airports1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta grenzberschreitend AirportHartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airportmay be thebusiest airport in the country, but its also remarkably reliable. According to research from Orbitz, alfruchtwein 85 percent of flights from Hartsfield-Jackson leave on time. The airport also boasts 221 different stores and 100 different dining outlets, so you have plenty of ways to fill your time if your flighty does get delayed. If youre running on fumes and you need to rest before a big meeting, try renting a private sleeping pod with a convertible sofa bed and a TV, which can be found on Concourse B. Hartsfield-Jackson also has a state of the art one-stop car rental facility, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.2. Seattle-Tacoma International AirportOnly 0.61 percent of flights from Seattle-Tacoma are canceled, according to Orbitz. Thats one of thelowest cancellation rates in the country. In the unlikely event that your flight is canceled, Seattle-Tacoma also has the fastest Wi-Fi speedof any airport in the US, so you can always remote in to your crucial meeting in a pinch - or harangue the ai rline on social media, if that is more your speed. Seattle-Tacoma also has two reasonably priced public lounges, so itseasy to escape the crowds when you need to add those last minute touches to your presentation.3. John F. Kennedy AirportWhile John F. Kennedy Airport is probably the most iconic airport in America, it doesnt necessarily havethe best record. Only 76 percent of JFKs flights leave on time, and almost 3 percent end up getting canceled, according to Orbitz. However, those are better stats than many other airports, and JFK does have an impressive selection of amenities. With 148 differentplaces to eat and more coffee shops than any other airport on this list, JFK ensures youll at least pass your delays in relative comfort. JFK also has an impressive number of private members-only lounges - 29 in total. Provided your company will pay for a subscription, youve got somewhere to retire and get some rest.4. McCarran International AirportDespite being located near Sin City, Mc Carran International Airportis pretty reliable 81 percent of its flights leave on time, and less than 1 percent are canceled, according to Orbitz. If youve been crammed into a budget carrier for a few hours, or you need to clear your head before your meeting, Fly Fit provides walking paths in the airports terminals that range from half a mile to 1.5 miles. McCarran isalso one of only two airports in theUSwith slot machines. If your pitch went badly - well, well leave that up to you5. OHare International AirportOHare International Airport is thefifth busiest airport in the world, and it has a relatively good flight record, with79 percent leaving on time, according to Orbitz. If the worst does happen, business travelers can take advantage of the airports relaxation facilities, including a yoga room and a spa. Even if youre inwardly livid, your colleagues will never know after youve hit the sauna.- It goes without saying that delays and cancelations are the most infuriating aspect of any trip, but this is especially true during high-stakes business trips. Youre more likely to make a good impression if you reach your destination on time and with minimal frustration. If you can make it work, definitely try flying from one of these airports the next time you have to travel for business.Irma Hunkeler works forResignal, a digital marketing agency.

How to Respond When They Tell You Well Get Back to You
How to Respond When They Tell You Well Get Back to YouHow to Respond When They Tell You Well Get Back to You Well Get Back to You Most of us have heard theZuckerbergian response far too many times. Its become a household phrase in the world of recruiting. And although most of us would like to see it go, it refuses to give in.No matter how outstanding was your job interview, you will still get to hear unterstellung few words before leaving the room. Recruiters use this vague, neutral language pretty often and its something you can almost never avoid. So, what can these words signal to you and how should you react to them? Lets have a look. What does well get back to you even mean? The ambiguous answer does not mean either that You are rejected or You are selected. Many of us get confused because it is infused with so many potential meanings that it just makes your head spin. More so if all the body language you can read is a hiring managers poker face.Lets try to decode what these guys may have in their minds while talking to youThere are some other candidates we need to consider. If they are not as qualified or as experienced as you then we will get back to you.I dont have the answer right now. I need to talk to someone before giving you the answer. Only then will I get back to you.Unfortunately, youre not quite eligible for this position. Still, I wont say anything right now because its not good manners to say so. Thats why I need to use I will get back to you.The first two of them give you some hope, which is great. So dont worry, theres no need to despair. This answer is not the end of your job prospects. On the contrary, it can as well be the next step towards getting you a job.Best practicesIts also good to have a an idea of how recruiting works. The hiring process in most of the companies is actually pretty complicated. All the communication between you and your potential employer is usually handled by the HR department. So its only reasonable if you expect to get a callback from the hiring manager. But what if you dont?1. Try to prevent the situation in the first placeBefore you leave the interview, ask about next steps and the decision timeline. Try to get an exact date or date range from the interviewer. Ask directly When can I expect to hear back about this position? This will put your mind to rest by giving you an idea of when you can expect to hear something. It will also give you a timeframe for following up appropriately without getting too pushy.2. Take initiative. If youre waiting for a response, sometimes the best choice is to be bold. Considering youve sent a thank-you notenzeichen some time ago, the next step is to call the HR department.Let them know about your continuing interest in the position and that you are eager to hear back. Without being too pushy, ask what the status of the position is. Be prepared to get no clear response as they may not be able to address this. However, they may be able to provide you with a pr ogress update or ask for more information from you. Its also a good idea to connect with employers at your prospective organisation via LinkedIn or other social networks to see if you can learn more through networking.3. Show dedicationYes, its important to follow up and stay on the companys radar. But discretion always comes first. Feel free to call for a status update, but be consistent with just one method of communication. Calling, emailing and mailing at the same time- that can send the wrong katechese and put them off for good. If you want to use voicemail, leave a short, courteous message to keep things professional. You need to stay reasonable, though. If its been over a month since youve heard anything, theres no point in beating a dead horse. The truth is that you have no control over the recruiting process and the entire situation is in someone elses hands. But dont let this cripple an otherwise successful job search. Take the time you need, shed your frustration and move on towards the next opportunity. It might be waiting around the corner3. Be patientRemember that the lukewarm response doesnt always equal rejection. Accept the fact that some information cant be shared right away. The company needs to fill the position but their timeline is often much looser than yours. You may be the winner, but they still need to wait to make an official offer due to the final approval or some bureaucratic jungle. In these cases, the best course of action is to wait it out for at least a week.Always keep pushing forwardWaiting is a real beast. Your spirits are low and you have no clue what may be happening in the meantime. You can even feel tempted to put your search on hold. But nothing could be worse.Dont let your demons run loose. Take heart and keep pushing forward. Success never comes easy, and definitely not to those do nothing but wait around for the phone to ring.Share Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

8 Great New Years Resolutions Related to Your Job Search
8 Great New Years Resolutions Related to Your Job Search8 Great New Years Resolutions Related to Your Job SearchMost New Years resolutions are the saatkorn year after year lose weight, save money, gossip less, volunteer more, find a new job, etc. But have you considered rethinking your list of resolutions this year to focus them more on the smaller steps you need to take to accomplish those bigger ones? For example, instead of just resolving to land a new job, try coming up with a handful of resolutions for things you can or should be doing to support this end goalGame to try this out? Heres a list of ideas for job search-related New Years resolutions to consider1. I will only apply for jobs I really want. When it comes to job searching, applying to lots of jobs doesnt necessarily yield more interviews or offers. In fact, it often has the opposite effect- youll hear back from fewer employers or none at all. This tends to happen when job binnenseekers start submitting their application s to any job that looks remotely interesting, rather than finding a job that really speaks to them. So look for jobs that make you excited just thinking about them- those are the jobs worth applying to.2. I will take a class. As more jobs appear in the workplace that never existed before, job seekers certainly have to stay on their toes. Relying on past education isnt going to cut it anymore, since the ever-evolving state of work means that new technologies will force workers to constantly update their industry knowledge. Look through job descriptions to see what employers in your field are looking for, and see if your education and skills are a match. If not, take a class so you can stay ahead of the curve and therefore be able to apply for locations that resonate with you.3. I will clean up my social media presence.Sure, its tedious and tiresome, but all it takes is one caustic comment or slightly inappropriate photo erreichbar to crush your chances of getting hired for a job. Star t by picking one social media profile at a time, and go through it from the perspective of a potential employer. If something seems slightly off-color or could be easily misconstrued, delete it ASAP. While you shouldnt dedicate all your time to a social media cleanup (your focus should be finding and applying to jobs, after all), review your profiles at least once a week or monthly. Before you know it, your online presence will be more suitable for recruiters and hiring managers to view.4. I will really consider the type of flexibility I want/need.The weather outside might be getting frightful, so its natural to want to work from the warm comfort of home (or if youre a digital nomad, a beautiful beach in Belize). Before you start looking for a work-from-home job, though, consider all of your flexible work options. Maybe you want to work remotely only a few days a week, and still go into an office so that you can be around your coworkers. Or maybe becoming a freelancer fits this stag e of your life. Perhaps a part-time position would work for you and your familys needs. Take the time to assess what type of work flexibility you need, and then tailor your job search to find only those jobs that fit the bill.5. I will learn how to network effectively. There are typically two schools of thought when it comes to networking. Either you really like it, or the very thought of it makes you want to cringe. If you fall into the latter category (and who doesnt?), you should make knowing how to network one of your top New Years resolutions. Since job searching is rarely a one-man show, you might need the help of some people in order to find a job. Expanding your professional circle via networking (either at local events or online) can greatly improve your chances of getting hired.6. I will be more organized. Many people want to purge their possessions at the beginning of a new year. And that sense of KonMari cleanliness should also apply to your home office, too (or whatever s pace you use to conduct your job search). Make sure that your desk is neat and tidy of any clutter, and that your files arent overflowing with unnecessary papers. Its also a good idea to clear out the digital clutter as well, and delete unimportant files and programs from your computer so that it runs more efficiently. Having a clean workspace will allow you to think more clearly as you apply for jobs, and also give you a sense of what it would be like to work remotely.7. I will focus on the follow up.After you apply to a job that you really want, make it a point to follow up with the employer or hiring manager. Reach out after a week or two to ensure that your application was submitted successfully, and see if the employer has any questions. This is also a great opportunity to reiterate how much you would like the job, from appreciating the companys culture, to feeling that you can be a true asset to the organization.8. I will create an Accomplishments Wall.Lets face it you might g et discouraged if your job search doesnt result in a job offer right away. To help steady yourself during those tough times when it feels like employers arent responding to your applications, create a collection of all your accomplishments. Take a memo board and attach items that are meaningful to you. You can include previous professional achievements (like awards or certificates), but be sure to include some personal touches, too. You might include a pic of you and your former coworkers whom you loved as a sign to remind yourself to build strong bonds with your future colleagues. You might include a photo of a beautiful mountain scene to encourage you to use your flex to travel and work at the same time. And be sure to put a photo up of your loved ones- whether its your partner, your children, even your pet- to not only help you realize that you need work-life balance, but to remind yourself of why you work in the first place.Start Your Job Search BROWSE OPEN FLEXIBLE JOBS

Reasons to quantify your accomplishments for employers
Reasons to quantify your accomplishments for employersReasons to quantify your accomplishments for employersReasons to quantify your accomplishments for employersThere are several reasons why it is essential to quantify ones accomplishments. For example for a Public Manager, measuring his performance and checking accomplishments, it will help his superiors and the firm in general understand his capabilities and level of competency. In addition, doing so will help his employers in several areas such as overall control, budget, aufsteigen and even help the firm learn more about their activities. courtesy of A.Brown unsplash.comReasons to quantify your accomplishmentsThe Magic In NumbersSpecific numbers play a very important role especially to the overall development of the firm. Attaching numbers to your accomplishments helps define and measure your accomplishments better. With numbers to play with, it is possible to make comparisons, set future goals and even measure performance of t he firm. When your list of accomplishments has a list of numbers attached to each factor, they start to make more sense. This also improves your credibility. For Contextualisation PurposesQuantifying your accomplishments helps provide a great level of context by helping the employers place the list of accomplishments into perspective. For an employer handling several departments, there are many employees to manage. With accomplishment reports from employees of each department along with the specific numbers, it becomes very easy to understand who to assign what task, with effect that overall productivity increases. For Efficiency MonitoringIf you are an employer in a big firm, there are many reports for you to get through daily. However, if the reports are simply a list of accomplishments, then it becomes almost impossible to get through all. On the other hand, if the report quantifies the accomplishments, highlighting the numbers it makes life much simpler for the employer and is als o likely to lead to a more successful firm.Keeping Track of the Firms ObjectivesMany firms implement KPI (key performance indicator). What KPI does is help determine how well the company is doing at meeting it goals. It is common for a manager to set out a number for the KPI for a project. This can be used for several purposes including measuring the performance of an individual employee. Now, for a firm that does implement such a structure involving KPIs, it becomes essential for an employee to quantify their accomplishments in a well-defined manner.Gauging Company PerformanceIt is always essential for any firm to monitor the progress of the employees and the overall firm. There are several methods to get this done. The best way to do this is by using numbers. Quantifying your accomplishments and placing them in a report can go a long way towards helping the manager gauge the progress of the company or firm. How to quantify your accomplishments? There are many advantages of quantify ing your accomplishments as already described in the article. It is not only important to make the list, it is also necessary to make sure it is done in the right format. Thus placing numbers to important accomplishments especially when they stand out is vital. Here a few sample accomplishments that should always be accompanied with the right number. clients acquired in the month of January of files organized of locations opened or closed of people successfully trained% of satisfied clients in the year 2016 of clients managed% of client referrals ratio of client retentionConclusionA list on how one can quantify their accomplishments would be endless. What is important here is to keep everything in context. For a recruitment firm it is important to know how many contracts were won and employees successfully placed. The accomplishments thus should be focused towards this subject. Another very important factor to remember is to use the right kind of language in a report. It is a good i dea to highlight the figures in a summary. But at the same time use strong language while writing a report.
